The Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows welcomes Prof. Michael Allen Gillespie (Political Science and Philosophy) as the new faculty director of the Angier B. Duke Scholarship Program. He has been at Duke for thirty years and has a long-standing interest in undergraduate education.
Gillespie is excited to guide this merit scholarship program after the successful leadership of Prof. Alex Rosenberg who mentored A.B. Duke Scholars for six years. Gillespie hopes to build on the program’s history of excellence. “I want to see what can be added to our scholars’ educations, not merely in class or in labs but by bringing them together and creating places in which ideas matter, places where they can interact not just with one another, but with faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduates,” said Gillespie.
Gillespie noted that during the first year in his role with the A.B. Duke program he hopes to provide occasions for interaction with speakers and lectures, as well as run a film series where A.B. Scholars and other students can meet to watch and discuss classic films.
